Background of the Study
Dental records have long been considered a cornerstone in forensic identification, particularly when other means of identification are compromised. In Asaba Local Government Area, Delta State, forensic anthropologists increasingly rely on dental evidence to establish identity, age, and sometimes even ethnicity of unidentified remains (Oghenekaro, 2023). With the advent of digital radiography and computerized dental mapping, the reliability and precision of dental records have significantly improved (Ibrahim, 2024). However, discrepancies in record-keeping, variations in dental treatment standards, and challenges in accessing historical data can undermine their reliability (Nwosu, 2025). This study investigates the consistency and forensic validity of dental records used in human identification processes. It critically assesses methodological standards and technological advancements in dental forensics, providing a comprehensive evaluation of their reliability in the Asaba context. By addressing gaps in current practices, the research aims to contribute to both academic discourse and practical improvements in forensic casework.

Statement of the Problem
In Asaba, the reliability of dental records in forensic investigations is often questioned due to inconsistent record maintenance and variations in dental care standards. These discrepancies create challenges in accurately identifying human remains, leading to potential misidentification and legal complications (Nwosu, 2025). Additionally, the integration of modern digital techniques with traditional record-keeping is not yet fully standardized. This study seeks to identify the factors that compromise the reliability of dental records in forensic anthropology and propose methodological improvements to enhance their accuracy and admissibility in legal proceedings (Oghenekaro, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the reliability of dental records in forensic identification.

  • To identify factors affecting the consistency of dental records.

  • To recommend improvements in record-keeping and forensic dental methodologies.

Research Questions:

  • How reliable are dental records in forensic identification processes?

  • What factors contribute to discrepancies in dental records?

  • How can record-keeping practices be standardized for improved forensic accuracy?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Digital radiography significantly enhances the accuracy of dental records.

  • H2: Inconsistent record-keeping negatively impacts forensic identification reliability.

  • H3: Standardized dental protocols improve the consistency and utility of dental evidence.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the reliability of dental records in forensic investigations. Its findings will benefit forensic practitioners, dental professionals, and legal authorities by recommending standardized protocols that enhance identification accuracy and support judicial processes. The study ultimately contributes to improved forensic practices and evidentiary integrity (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the evaluation of dental record reliability in forensic anthropology within Asaba Local Government Area, Delta State. It does not extend to other forensic identification methods.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Dental Records: Documented clinical and radiographic data of an individual’s dental history.

  • Forensic Identification: The process of establishing an individual’s identity using scientific methods.

  • Digital Radiography: The use of digital imaging technology to capture dental X-rays for analysis.
